I know there are plenty of apps for that, but\u00a0I already have an ongoing\u00a0<strong>Telegram chat with her<\/strong>, so I created a Telegram bot that sends a message in that chat every time I&#8217;m in a particular area. How? Here the list of the different pieces to put in place:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Create a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/telegram.org\/faq#q-how-do-i-create-a-group\">Telegram\u00a0group chat<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Create a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/core.telegram.org\/bots\">Telegram bot<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Enable bot to send messages to the group chat<\/li>\n<li>Write an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ifttt.com\">IFTTT<\/a> recipe that activates the bot\u00a0every time I (my phone) enter in a particular location<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Just a side note: The same approach works also for other messaging apps that support bot integration and activation via webhooks. Even better for Slack, that has its own channel on IFTTT, so no need to deal with webhooks.<\/p>\n<h4>Create the Telegram group chat<\/h4>\n<p>Nothing to say here, if you already have Telegram, you know how to create a group chat between the people you want to notify. Even if the conversation is between me and my wife only, I created a groups chat and not direct message because also the bot needs to be included.<\/p>\n<h4>Create the Telegram bot<\/h4>\n<p>I followed the <a href=\"https:\/\/core.telegram.org\/bots#3-how-do-i-create-a-bot\">official documentation to create a Telegram bot<\/a>, asking to BotFather for a new one, with name\u00a0Lurch (oh yes, the name of my digital butler since my very first project of this kind during high school years), username YellowBot.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rainbowbreeze.it\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/20160804-createbot.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10244\" src=\"https:\/\/rainbowbreeze.it\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/20160804-createbot.jpg\" alt=\"20160804-createbot\" width=\"600\" height=\"686\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rainbowbreeze.it\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/20160804-createbot.jpg 600w, https:\/\/rainbowbreeze.it\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/20160804-createbot-175x200.jpg 175w, https:\/\/rainbowbreeze.it\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/20160804-createbot-262x300.jpg 262w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As you can see, BotFather returned a <strong>token<\/strong> to use while calling the <a href=\"https:\/\/core.telegram.org\/bots\/api\">Bot API<\/a>. I also set Lurch profile picture using <em>\/setuserpic<\/em> command.<\/p>\n<p>I finally added the newly created YellowBot to the previously created group chat.<\/p>\n<h4>Enable bot to send messages to the group chat<\/h4>\n<p>Telegram exposes a convenient webhook for posting a message thru\u00a0a bot: the <a href=\"https:\/\/core.telegram.org\/bots\/api#sendmessage\">sendmessage<\/a> API.\u00a0It&#8217;s as simple as making an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/core.telegram.org\/bots\/api#making-requests\">HTTP call<\/a>, with some parameters in the payload. Two of them are\u00a0required, the <em>chat_id<\/em> and the <em>message<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>chat_id<\/strong>: as per documentation, &#8220;<em>Unique identifier for the target chat, or username of the target channel (in the format @channelusername)<\/em>&#8220;. So, the id of the group chat previously created. To obtain it, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/core.telegram.org\/bots\/api#getupdates\">getUpdates<\/a> API can be used, using the following syntax (it&#8217;s important to change <em>XXtokenXX<\/em>\u00a0with the token previously obtained by BotFather):<\/p>\n<pre lang=\"bash\">curl https:\/\/api.telegram.org\/botXXtokenXX\/getUpdates<\/pre>\n<p>Unfortunately, this call returns an empty json, because there are no messages for the bot so far:<\/p>\n<pre lang=\"json\">{\"ok\":true,\"result\":[]}<\/pre>\n<p>Writing message in the group chat where the bot has been added doesn&#8217;t help, because of the <a href=\"https:\/\/core.telegram.org\/bots#privacy-mode\">privacy-mode<\/a>\u00a0activated by default for all the bots. \u00a0As per documentation, bots will receive only messages that start with a slash \u2018\/\u2019 , so I wrote a test commmand like &#8220;\/test&#8221;, but \/ + any combination of letters can be used. This time, the same call to <em>getUpdates<\/em>\u00a0returns:<\/p>\n<pre lang=\"json\">{  \r\n  \"ok\":true,\r\n  \"result\":[  \r\n    {  \r\n      \"update_id\":43841716,\r\n      \"message\":{  \r\n        \"message_id\":122,\r\n        \"from\":{  \r\n          \"id\":000000000,\r\n          \"first_name\":\"Alfredo\",\r\n          \"username\":\"rainbowbreeze\"\r\n        },\r\n        \"chat\":{  \r\n          \"id\":-235327410,\r\n          \"title\":\"YellowFamily chat\",\r\n          \"type\":\"group\"\r\n        },\r\n        ....\r\n}\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>So, the group chat_id is\u00a0-235327410. As per documentation, a negative id\u00a0refers\u00a0to group chat, positive to private chat with\u00a0a user.<\/p>\n<p>At this point, it is already possible to send a bot message\u00a0in the group chat, using a simple CURL command. I used a POST request and a application\/json as content-type <a href=\"https:\/\/core.telegram.org\/bots\/api#making-requests\">among the different ones available<\/a>, so I formatted the payload accordingly:<\/p>\n<pre lang=\"bash\">curl -X POST -H \"Content-Type: application\/json\" -d '{\"chat_id\":\"-235327410\", \"text\":\"Hello world!\"}' https:\/\/api.telegram.org\/botXXtokenXX\/sendMessage<\/pre>\n<p>obtaining a reply similar to<\/p>\n<pre lang=\"json\">{  \r\n  \"ok\":true,\r\n  \"result\":{  \r\n    \"message_id\":177,\r\n    \"from\": ....\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>The &#8220;Hello world!&#8221; message should also appear on the group chat, with the bot as sender.<\/p>\n<h4>IFTTT integration\u00a0to send messages using the bot<\/h4>\n<p>IFTTT has one channel to trigger an action when the device is in a specific location (in my case, entering the train station) for <a href=\"https:\/\/ifttt.com\/android_location\">Android<\/a> and for <a href=\"https:\/\/ifttt.com\/ios_location\">iOS<\/a>, but hasn&#8217;t a dedicated channel\u00a0for Telegram (yet). Luckily, the <a href=\"https:\/\/ifttt.com\/maker\">Maker<\/a> channel comes in handy: what it does is to make an HTTP call to an URL specifying the kind of call (GET, POST, UPDATE etc), the content type and the message payload (if any). The exact information required to activate the Telegram bot just created.<\/p>\n<p>So, first step is to create a new recipe with the <a href=\"https:\/\/ifttt.com\/android_location\">Android Location<\/a> channel as &#8220;this&#8221; part. Once downloaded the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.ifttt.ifttt\">IF app for Android<\/a> on the\u00a0phone and connected the channel, I selected the &#8220;You enter an area&#8221; trigger, selected the area of my interest and created the trigger<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10246\" src=\"https:\/\/rainbowbreeze.it\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/20160804-locationtrigger.jpg\" alt=\"IFTTT location trigger\" width=\"600\" height=\"463\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rainbowbreeze.it\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/20160804-locationtrigger.jpg 600w, https:\/\/rainbowbreeze.it\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/20160804-locationtrigger-200x154.jpg 200w, https:\/\/rainbowbreeze.it\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/20160804-locationtrigger-300x232.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For the &#8220;that&#8221; part, I selected the Maker channel and &#8220;Make a web request&#8221; as trigger, using the following parameters:<br \/>\n<em>URL<\/em>: https:\/\/api.telegram.org\/botXXtokenXX\/sendMessage<br \/>\n<em>Method<\/em>: POST<br \/>\n<em>Content type<\/em>: application\/json<br \/>\n<em>Body<\/em>: {&#8220;chat_id&#8221;:&#8221;-235327410&#8243;, &#8220;text&#8221;:&#8221;It seems Alfredo is in at Pavia train station&#8221;}<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10247\" src=\"https:\/\/rainbowbreeze.it\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/20160804-makerchannel.jpg\" alt=\"IFTTT Maker channel\" width=\"600\" height=\"458\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rainbowbreeze.it\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/20160804-makerchannel.jpg 600w, https:\/\/rainbowbreeze.it\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/20160804-makerchannel-200x153.jpg 200w, https:\/\/rainbowbreeze.it\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/20160804-makerchannel-300x229.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/>That&#8217;s all. Once I&#8217;m nearby the train station, the bot send a message in the group chat.\u00a0Obviously, there are things to improve. For example, the recipe fires every time I&#8217;m around the location, even if I&#8217;m there for a walk. It would be great to activate the recipe only for a particular time interval, but IFTTT doesn&#8217;t offer this option. But the recipe\u00a0could be manually disabled.<\/p>\n<p>Following the same method, there are <a href=\"\/more-telegram-bot-features-using-ifttt\/\">plenty of stuff the bot can write in the chat<\/a>, using the many IFTTT channels.
