{"id":80,"date":"2006-12-04T13:38:40","date_gmt":"2006-12-04T11:38:40","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2017-01-12T14:31:32","modified_gmt":"2017-01-12T12:31:32","slug":"as400-tn5250-terminal-on-linux","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rainbowbreeze.it\/wordpress\/as400-tn5250-terminal-on-linux\/","title":{"rendered":"AS\/400 tn5250 terminal on Linux"},"content":{"rendered":"<table border=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a href=\"\/site-media\/blog-images\/2006-images\/as400term-xt5250.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0pt none; margin: 5px;\" title=\"as400term-xt5250_tn\" src=\"\/site-media\/blog-images\/2006-images\/as400term-xt5250_tn.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"as400term-xt5250_tn\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" align=\"left\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThere are lot of ways for accessing to the <a title=\"IBM AS400\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/IBM_System_i\" target=\"_blank\">AS400<\/a> functionalities (today know as iSeries, a wide-used &#8220;mainframe&#8221; produced by IBM) \t\t\tand one of the most important is, surely, the tn5250 terminal \t\t\temulation.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Under Gnu\/Linux, we can do this with different software, and each one has is pros and cons.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Personally i used the <a title=\"tn5250 Home Page\" href=\"http:\/\/tn5250.sourceforge.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">tn5250<\/a> software for simply terminal emulation, but also the IBM iSeries Access for Linux can be used for most advanced functions.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h3>tn5250 &#8211; Linux tn5250 emulator<\/h3>\n<p align=\"justify\">Under Debian and Debial-like distros (like Kubuntu, that i use), first step is install the tn5250 software<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>sudo apt-get install tn5250<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>or use your preferred package manager (synaptic, kpackage, others)<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">After this, you are virtually ready to connect to your AS400. Just run the following command <em>(172.16.1.1 is the IP address of my AS400)<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>xt5250 172.16.1.1<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The software, like the tn5250 protocol itself, has lot of options, but for my needs the most important are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div><strong>map<\/strong>: set the translation table between ASCII and EBCDIC. In my case, i use an italian translation map, corresponding to the code 280. For a list of all translation maps, run this command: <em>man tn5250rc<\/em> and search for the <em>Translation Maps<\/em> section<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>env.DEVNAME<\/strong>: set the device name for the AS\/400 to assign to the 5250 session. In my case, this name is DSP002A<\/li>\n<li><strong>env.TERM<\/strong>: Set the terminal model name for the emulation session to use. In my case is IBM-3477-FC <em>(80&#215;132 color mode)<\/em>. For a list of all terminal models, run the same command of above, <em>man tn5250rc<\/em>, and search for <em>Display Types<\/em> section<\/li>\n<li><strong>font_80<\/strong>: the font used when terminal is in 80 column mode<\/li>\n<li><strong>font_132<\/strong>: the font used when terminal is in 132 column mode<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ok, with this parameters, my launch string became:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\/usr\/bin\/xt5250 map=280 env.DEVNAME=DSP002A env.TERM=IBM-3477-FC font_80=10&#215;20 font_132=10&#215;20 172.16.1.1<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I put this string in a new menu entries, using the icon from the file \/usr\/share\/pixmaps\/tn5250-48&#215;48.png<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0pt none; margin: 5px;\" title=\"Kde menu with tn5250 shortcut\" src=\"\/site-media\/blog-images\/2006-images\/as400term-menu.png\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Kde menu with tn5250 shortcut\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" align=\"bottom\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Joke is done :)<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Little trick: with <em>Ctrl + Right click<\/em> over the tn5250 window, you can access to the &#8220;<strong>VT Fonts<\/strong>&#8221; menu, and with <em>Ctrl + Left click<\/em> you can access to the &#8220;<strong>Main Options<\/strong>&#8221; menu.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">You can also create a config file with all the options and then launch xt5250 &lt;filename&gt;.
